I wish you success as being your own boss has obvious advantages but it can be difficult and painful when revenue dries up; my advice to you from my own experience is to have from the beginning your own project to work on when work is scarce.

The reasons are numerous, a) it keeps you busy and focused, b) once finished you have a product you can profit from and c) it is something you can showcase to prospective clients.

Also it is important you have complete confidence in your family for support - if you are serious about being your own boss, then don't just take a day job to please the other half even if it's short term - as your business will suffer, guaranteed.

Being your own boss for yourself and your family means that you do need to suffer and go without the nice things in life when there is no work coming in - all you can do is just stick with it and keep blowing your own trumpet.
