For those in Europe with large plane fares to get across the pond, check out the Dutch Conference which is a few weeks later than Tek and just as good! http://phpconference.nl (Brandon, hope you don't mind the blatant plug, see you at tek!!) I will be attending Confoo (speaker) and Tek X (attendee) this year. What prompted me to get involved with the PHP community and conferences was when I started attending, regularly, Dallas PHP User Group. Get involved in your local user group! I did attend the phpBenelux 2010 conference last weekend, and all I can say is that I recognize every single aspect mentioned in the blogpost plus the fact that conferences do encourage you to try new things. You get pushed in the right direction for things you might or might not have heard about which then seem to be more attractive to implement or much easier than you initially thought. Also many user groups have meetings which are absolutely free to attend. I would encourage everyone to have a look at those meetings somewhere near you sometime. These meetings have much in common with the conferences and give you a good taste of it.
